Water Research Australia (WaterRA) is pleased to announce that Dr David Bergmann has been appointed as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective 28 January 2025.
Bergmann brings a wealth of experience as a PhD-qualified scientist, innovator, and leader, with a proven track record of delivering research outcomes and driving innovation across both public and private sectors.
Bergmann joins WaterRA from South East Water, where he has spent the past nine years establishing and leading a successful research and development program. Throughout his career, he has led large R&D teams and portfolios, excelling in strategy, innovation, commercialisation, and intellectual property. His diverse background spans corporate, not-for-profit, and member-based organisations, uniquely positioning him to drive WaterRA into the future.
Bergmann’s appointment follows an extensive national and international search supported by an external recruitment firm. Reflecting on the process, WaterRA Board Chair Mark Gobbie said:
“David stood out for his exceptional track record in delivering research outcomes and driving innovation across public and private sectors. His strategic vision, passion, and deep understanding of the water industry made him the clear choice among a highly competitive field of candidates.”
As the incoming CEO, Bergmann’s initial focus will be engaging with WaterRA staff, members, and the organisation’s research portfolio. He is particularly committed to consulting on new membership value propositions, supporting the growth of WaterRA’s membership base, and enhancing service offerings to meet the evolving needs of the water sector.
“I am very excited to be given this opportunity to lead the Water Research Australia team,” Bergmann said. “They have a strong legacy of research, active and engaged members, and so much to contribute to the science for a better sector, community, and the environment.”
His transition to CEO will create a vacancy on the WaterRA Board, and in accordance with the WaterRA Constitution, the process to fill this role will commence early in the new year.
Until Bergmann’s commencement in late January, Interim CEO Mark Andersson will continue to lead WaterRA’s operations, ensuring a seamless transition.
WaterRA is thrilled to welcome Bergmann into his new role and looks forward to the energy, expertise, and vision he will bring to advance WaterRA’s mission to deliver collaborative water research, innovation and capability building that supports public health and safeguards the sustainability of our water resources.
