UV upgrade delivers safer drinking water for Lancefield residents

A new ultraviolet disinfection system is strengthening Lancefield’s water treatment process, improving quality and safety for local customers.

Lancefield residents are benefiting from an enhanced water treatment process following the completion of a new ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system by Greater Western Water (GWW).

The new technology uses powerful UV light to neutralise microorganisms as part of the town’s water disinfection process, providing an additional safeguard against pathogens.

GWW General Manager of Growth and Infrastructure, Ian Burton, said the technology strengthens water quality standards and delivers cleaner, safer drinking water to the community.

“UV disinfection adds an extra layer of protection to our treatment process for Lancefield’s water supply, which already met strict quality guidelines,” Burton said. “It’s a chemical-free process that effectively eliminates pathogens and targets specific bacteria found in open catchments.”

Technology with minimal environmental impact

The UV disinfection system operates within a metal cylinder containing long fluorescent tubes that expose the water to ultraviolet light as it flows through the unit.

Chosen for its efficiency and low environmental impact, the system requires less infrastructure than other treatment methods while maintaining high levels of protection.

“The system has a compact footprint, requiring less infrastructure than other options, making it the best choice from an environmental perspective,” Burton said. “This upgrade reinforces our commitment to delivering safe, high-quality drinking water tailored to the needs of our various supply systems.”

Part of a wider regional program

Water for Lancefield is treated through a multi-stage process, beginning at the dissolved air flotation (DAF) plant, before flowing through the UV system and undergoing chlorination before distribution.

The six-month project required specialist international equipment, with the UV units sourced from Germany and a custom-coated protective shed manufactured in Japan to ensure long-term durability.

Importantly, the process does not alter the taste or smell of drinking water.

The Lancefield upgrade follows a successful UV installation at the Myrniong Water Filtration Plant earlier this year, part of a broader regional program to strengthen water quality across GWW’s service area.
