Installation has begun in Sydney homes for an Australian-first pilot program by Sydney Water to reduce water use. The Hydraloop greywater recycling system recycles and reuses household water, saving around 72,000 litres a year for the average home – which translates to a 16 per cent saving on the typical annual water bill.
Hydraloop is a global innovation that collects and treats water from showers, baths and laundry. It re-uses it for toilet flushing, washing machines and gardens – helping the environment and saving water and money. Hydraloop is a smart, unique water recycling system that treats wastewater with low maintenance and energy-efficient biological treatment process. It provides clean, clear, safe and disinfected water. This innovative technology is roughly the size of a fridge and is designed to be installed in the home.
The system is expected to save between 35 and 45 per cent of average household water use. That is the equivalent of 1000-1700 litres per week while reducing the carbon footprint and saving money. Current modelling suggests the Hydraloop can hold around 72,000 litres a year for the average home – which translates to a 16 per cent saving on the typical residential annual water bill.
This trial places Sydney Water at the forefront of experimenting with innovative technology that helps to improve water efficiency. More than 30 Hydraloop units are involved in the pilot, with plumbing work now underway for the first two installations.
Hydraloop to make an impact across Sydney
The first location is a multi-unit social housing complex on Bridge Road in Glebe, where four Hydraloop units are being installed. The second is a residential home at Castlecrag. Other Sydney suburbs involved in the Hydraloop trial include:
- East Willoughby
- Cromer
- Brooklyn
- Warrawee
- Warriewood
- Randwick
- Longueville
- Newtown
- Balmain
- Stanhope Gardens
Hydraloop was chosen as the winner of the WIPO Global Awards 2022 in July 2022 for its unique, patented technology that can substantially reduce water consumption worldwide, realising a huge social impact.
