Smooth greens abound with recycled water

Urban Utilities is using recycled water to keep Royal Queensland Golf Club green and pristine as the world’s best prepare to tee off for the 2024 Australian PGA Championship.

Every year, Urban Utilities supplies around 100 Olympic swimming pools of high-quality recycled water to irrigate the 97 hectares of lush green course, no matter the weather.

Urban Utilities Executive Leader of Customer and Innovation Shane Morgan said they were pleased to be able to provide the club with a sustainable and drought-proof water supply.

“We’re proud to be playing our part in getting the club ready as it prepares to step onto the world stage,” he said. “The high-quality recycled water is produced at our Gibson Island Resource Recovery Centre and pumped to the course via a pipeline. By supplying this water for irrigation, we’re helping keep the course in top shape and easing pressure on our region’s precious drinking water supplies.”

Royal Queensland Golf Club General Manager Sean Dobson said treated and repurposed water played a critical role in maintaining the club’s impeccable course.

“It takes a lot of water to keep our fairways and greens to the high standard required for prestige tournaments such as the PGA Tour,” he said.

“Using recycled water to irrigate our course is part of our commitment to sustainability and the environment.”

Morgan said this partnership is just one example of how Urban Utilities is focused on using our most precious resource – water – more sustainably as our communities grow.

“We supply around 1,500 Olympic swimming pools of recycled water across our service region for industrial, agricultural and irrigation purposes,” he said. “This water benefits our customers and communities by greening local sporting fields, supporting farmers and protecting our drinking water supplies.”
