Key stakeholders and the broader community, including impacted residents, are now invited to take part in the review of the Maribyrnong River flooding event. Submissions opened on Tuesday, January 17th, 2023 and will remain open until Friday, March 17, 2023.

A series of six information sessions, both in person and online, will be held for the community to learn more about the review and how to make a submission.

Nick Wimbush, an independent expert in planning and the environment, will lead the review. Mr Wimbush brings over 25 years of experience, including chairing many significant public inquiries.

The review will include an examination of the following:

  • The causes and contributors to the Flood Event in the urban catchment, including any potential impacts of the Flemington Racecourse Flood Wall on the extent and duration of the Flood Event; and
  • Any impact of prior works or activities in the urban catchment on flood levels and extent during the Flood Event.

Maribyrnong River flooding event critical to learn from

Melbourne Water Managing Director Nerina Di Lorenzo acknowledged Mr Wimbush’s reputation for integrity as vital to ensuring a comprehensive and open review process.

“An independent, open and transparent review should hear from as many voices as possible, which is why we’ve made it as simple as we can for anyone who wants to be involved in doing so, particularly any impacted residents who may need a bit more time to consider their submission,” Dr Di Lorenzo said.

“Flood planning and management are constantly evolving. Whatever the outcome of this review, we welcome the opportunity to learn and provide the best possible services for Victorians.

“Since the Maribyrnong River flood event, we’ve been out every day making essential repairs and clearing debris. We’ve visited many impacted homes and businesses and seen the effects of this recent extreme weather first-hand. Our hearts and support go out to those affected by flooding in Maribyrnong and across the state.”

Findings and recommendations are expected to be provided to the Victorian Government later in 2023. They will be made public after the process.

Submissions can be made online, by post or by email.
