Western Australia has appointed Jane Bennett as the new Deputy Chair of the Environmental Protection Authority, marking a significant leadership transition for the state’s environmental regulator. The WA EPA Deputy Chair appointment reinforces the EPA’s focus on transparent, science-based assessments across land, water and infrastructure projects.
Bennett has served as an EPA member since 2024 and will hold the Deputy Chair role until June 2027. She replaces outgoing Deputy Chair Lee McIntosh, who has completed a five-year term contributing to assessment reforms and strengthened environmental outcomes.
Bennett brings more than two decades of experience in urban development, planning policy and legislative reform. Her appointment reflects a growing emphasis on integrated land use, environmental planning and long-term resilience across Western Australia.
Experience shaping the new WA EPA Deputy Chair’s leadership
Bennett’s background spans the Western Australian Planning Commission, the Urban Development Institute of Australia and senior local government roles. She has delivered major development projects and contributed to policy frameworks that influence environmental and water-related decisions.
She is a recipient of the UDIA Women in Leadership Award and a fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia. Her skills in governance and strategic planning support the EPA’s work across complex environmental assessments.
Minister for Environment Matthew Swinbourn said Bennett’s experience will significantly strengthen the EPA’s leadership.
“Ms Bennett will be a tremendous asset to the EPA in her expanded role as Deputy Chair with her wealth of experience across planning, policy and governance,” Swinbourn said.
He said the new WA EPA Deputy Chair understands how collaboration shapes environmental outcomes.
“She understands the importance of collaboration between government, industry and community to achieve sustainable outcomes,” he said.
Swinbourn said he was confident the EPA will continue to deliver strong, forward-looking environmental advice.
“I have every confidence that under her stewardship as Deputy Chair, the EPA will continue to deliver rigorous, transparent and forward-looking environmental advice,” he said.
EPA governance and the role of the WA EPA Deputy Chair
The EPA operates under the Environmental Protection Act 1986, which requires it to use its best endeavours to protect the environment. The Governor of Western Australia appoints members based on ministerial nomination.
The WA Government thanked McIntosh for her service and for advancing the EPA’s strategic priorities. Her leadership supported improved assessment processes and environmental safeguards across major project planning.
Bennett steps into the WA EPA Deputy Chair position at a time of significant pressure on land use, environmental approvals and climate resilience.
Her leadership will help guide assessment processes that intersect with water security, infrastructure planning and long term environmental management.
The appointment strengthens the EPA’s capacity to provide clear and reliable environmental advice as Western Australia continues to grow.
