New leadership sought for Victorian water utilities

The Victorian Government is seeking a wide range of community members to join the boards of water utilities as leadership figures.

The Victorian Government is seeking a wide range of community members to continue providing safe, secure, affordable water and overseeing the state’s critical water sector.

Minister for Water Gayle Tierney opened expressions of interest for community members to join the boards of Victoria’s 18 water authorities, nine catchment management authorities (CMAs), and the Birrarung Council.

“A wide range of community members were appointed to board positions in 2023, and we want to continue to build on this in 2025,” she said.

Victoria’s public water sector is central to supporting jobs, economic growth, and the environment. With a growing population and the impacts of a changing climate, Victoria must adapt to these challenges.

Around 120 board positions will be available across the state, overseeing the delivery of critical water services and regional catchments and waterways.

Positions with the Birrarung Council play a key role in protecting and preserving the Birrarung (Yarra) River.

Applications will be supported by water sector experience, governance and finance skills, an understanding of community engagement, and experience in land and infrastructure management.

The 2023 appointment process resulted in boards that more closely reflect the diversity of Victoria’s community, with women making up more than half of water board members across the sector.

Regional Victorians are encouraged to apply, bringing knowledge and expertise to these local challenges.

Applicants with an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values and traditional ecological knowledge of managinge land and water resources are also encouraged.

“If you think you have the skills for the role, are committed to the public provision of water, and want to make a difference to our community, economy and environment, I encourage you to apply,” Tierney said.

An independent panel will lead the selection process. Expressions of interest close on Tuesday, 8 April 2025. For more information on board vacancies, visit www.boards.vic.gov.au.
