Hunter Water reservoirs upgraded ahead of summer demand

Hunter Water reservoirs have undergone major upgrades ahead of summer, boosting storage reliability and supporting network resilience as the Lower Hunter prepares for hotter conditions and increasing pressure on water supply systems.

Hunter Water has completed a series of major upgrades across its reservoir network to improve water security ahead of the summer peak. The program strengthens the reliability of Hunter Water reservoirs and supports the wider supply system as the region prepares for hotter weather and higher demand.

The utility has replaced roofing and undertaken structural refurbishments at several storage facilities, guided by detailed condition assessments. The upgrades are part of a broader strategy to improve operational resilience as the Lower Hunter experiences more variable climate conditions.

How upgrades support the performance of Hunter Water reservoirs

Hunter Water Managing Director Darren Cleary said the works ensure the region enters summer with substantial reserves and improved infrastructure performance.

“Our reservoirs are at healthy levels heading into summer, and these upgrades ensure they remain reliable during hotter and drier conditions,” Cleary said.

He said the investment forms part of long-term planning to strengthen network resilience and maintain customer confidence.

Upgrades were completed at several high-priority sites, ensuring the structural integrity of the storage facilities and improving operational safety. Each project included modern roofing materials, internal refurbishment, and enhanced weather protection.

Planning ahead for hotter summers and higher demand

Cleary said the region is seeing more climate variability and that preparedness is essential.

“We continue to invest in the maintenance and renewal of our assets so we can deliver safe, high-quality drinking water now and into the future,” he said.

While reservoirs are performing well, Hunter Water is encouraging customers to use water efficiently during summer to help manage demand.

The upgrade program forms part of Hunter Water’s long-term approach to balancing infrastructure performance, climate challenges and sustainable use.

Cleary said customers can help support network resilience by adopting simple efficiency practices, particularly during hotter months when demand increases across the region.
