GWMWater recycled water project well underway

Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water (GWMWater) is laying pipes this month for a recycled water project. Those pipes are being laid along Natimuk Road, Wimmera Highway, Riley Road, Florence Street, Geodetic Road and Curran Road as part of the Horsham Agriculture SmartWater and Integrated Water Management Project.

Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water (GWMWater) is laying pipes this month for a recycled water project. Those pipes are being laid along Natimuk Road, Wimmera Highway, Riley Road, Florence Street, Geodetic Road and Curran Road. It forms part of the Horsham Agriculture SmartWater and Integrated Water Management Project.

Once construction is complete, the SmartWater recycled water pipeline will run along the Wimmera Highway from Rudolphs Rd to the Horsham Racecourse. It will also head north along Curran Rd to the Aerodrome, Langlands Park and Blue Ribbon Road.

The pipeline will enable access to recycled water for green space in Horsham. This includes the racecourse, cemetery, sports ovals and Langlands Park. These green spaces usually rely on drinking water or stormwater for irrigation purposes.

GWMWater Managing Director, Mark Williams, said the SmartWater project focused on improving the quality of and access to recycled water. It will open up more opportunities for reuse and integration with other water sources to provide a secure supply for the region.

“The Wimmera region is particularly susceptible to periods of drought, as we saw with the Millennium drought. This project will mean that our community will have access to green spaces, even during drier periods, helping us to build a climate-resilient region.”

What GWMWater’s recycled water project is also achieving

As part of the project, upgrades at the Horsham Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and Agriculture Victoria’s Horsham facilities are also currently underway. This includes a Dissolved Air Floatation plant being built at the Horsham WWTP. It will further improve the water quality before it’s delivered to customers. There will also be major upgrades of irrigation systems at Agriculture Victoria’s SmartFarm.

Customers along the SmartWater pipeline route and nearby the Horsham Wastewater Treatment Plant have the opportunity to submit proposals for the purchase and reuse of recycled water.

Expression of Interest forms are available on the GWMWater website at

The project is scheduled for completion later this year.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s National Water Grid Fund, Agriculture Victoria and GWMWater. The Victorian Government is funding local connections through the Integrated Water Management grant program.
