Water corporations provide a range of water services to customers within their service areas, comprising water supply, sewage and trade waste disposal and treatment, water delivery for irrigation and domestic and stock purposes, drainage, and salinity mitigation services.
Different states and territories have different water corporations and authorities. In some states, the local council acts as the water corporation for rural and regional areas. In most metropolitan areas of Australia, residents and businesses only have one water corporation that provides them with water and wastewater services.
In general, water corporations across Australia are non-competitive. They each have a unique area to service and no other water corporations or authorities are permitted to service that area. The state or territory government tends to be the majority shareholder of any water corporation in Australia.
