Beaufort to benefit from sustainable solutions

The Beaufort community is set to benefit from the $3 million investment, improving the playing surfaces for multiple sports and recreational community facilities as part of the Beaufort Reuse for Recreation Project.

This sustainable community project is funded by the Victorian Government’s Integrated Water Management Program ($1.4 million), Central Highlands Water ($1.6 million) and in-kind support from the Pyrenees Shire Council.

Once complete, the project will provide environmental and sustainable benefits through the reuse of the Beaufort community’s wastewater within the urban setting, irrigating the surfaces of the primary and secondary school oval, golf course, croquet court, and recreation reserve.

Progress on the project has continued with installing and commissioning the electrical works at the Beaufort Wastewater Treatment Plant. This will allow CHW operators to communicate with the treatment plant remotely, allowing system control of the recycled water pumping system and dosing facility. It will also collect data from the system.

Testing and commission of the recycled water system are currently underway across the 3km transfer pipeline from the treatment plant to the end community users. This will allow for the effective irrigation of the green spaces in these community spaces and the supply of approximately 100 megalitres per year.

CHW Managing Director Jeff Haydon was pleased with the project’s progress.

“CHW is pleased to share that this exciting project continues to progress. This will provide beneficial and safe water reuse for these recreational spaces and reduce the demand on the town’s water supply,” Haydon said. “Once complete, the system will be able to supply approximately 100 megalitres of water per year, which is like filling the MCG to approximately 6m high or goal post height.”
