The crown for Tasmania’s best tasting tap water—and the all-important bragging rights—have been claimed.
Fern Tree has won the title of having Tasmania’s best tasting tap water in 2024 after a thrilling IXOM Best Tasting Tap Water Competition held in Devonport on Tuesday.
TasWater General Manager of Operations, Brendan Windmeyer, said water from Fern Tree will now be sent to compete on the national stage.
“The Fern Tree treatment plant has a long-standing history of producing exceptional water for the community,” Windmeyer said. “It’s a proud day for the plant operators who work around the clock to ensure the water not only tastes great but is safe to drink. We will be looking for back-to-back national titles after Fern Tree’s triumph in 2023, and we can’t wait to see what the national judges think of this year’s entry.”
Water samples are subjected to a blind taste test and rated according to the Water Tasting Wheel, which outlines some of the attributes water professionals use when judging, such as colour, clarity, odour, and taste.
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said it was a fantastic result for the residents of Hobart.
‘’How great is it that Tassie’s capital city boasts the best-tasting water? It’s another great reason to drink tap water, rather than buying imported water in plastic bottles with more impurities, creates plastic pollution and litter – and does not stack up on taste either,’’ Cr Reynolds said.
