Westernport Water is proud to share its vision for a low-carbon, regenerative future with its latest Climate Change Strategy 2023-28 launch.
The five-year strategy outlines the Corporation’s plans to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 and 100% sourced renewable energy by 2025.
The actions in the strategy go beyond net zero and aim to actively restore and replenish the environment rather than minimise harm.
Since our first strategy in 2017, our understanding and awareness of climate-related risks and opportunities have grown. Customer expectations of climate action have evolved. So too, has government policy, with new legislation driving change across the water sector.
Our pathway to net zero and beyond includes an investment of $20 million in climate-related capital improvement projects, which will see a feasibility study for a biogas facility to turn waste into energy, the installation of more solar panels, the installation of floating wetlands into the wastewater treatment process, increased recycled water usage, revegetation of land as well as the transition to electric vehicles.
