South East Water’s Ben Evans has been named the 2025 Water Industry Operations Association (WIOA) Victorian Operator of the Year. He was recognised for his outstanding service, leadership, and dedication to the water industry over an impressive 37-year career.

Evans’ commitment to operational excellence and safety has remained unwavering from his early days as a trainee with the Pakenham Water Board in 1988 to his current role as Lead Operator overseeing 6 wastewater treatment plants.

A calm and capable leader, Evans is known for his hands-on approach, extensive industry knowledge and willingness to go above and beyond to keep services running smoothly for customers and the environment – no matter the challenge.

South East Water Managing Director Lara Olsen said Evans’ recognition is a proud moment for the organisation.

“Ben embodies everything great about our organisation and our industry – reliability, teamwork and a deep sense of responsibility in delivering for our customers and community,” Olsen said. “He’s a mentor to many, a steady hand in a difficult situation, and a highly respected leader at South East Water. This award is a fitting recognition of his dedication and contribution over nearly 4 decades.”

Evans has championed continuous improvement throughout his career, completing more than 40 industry training programs, from biological nutrient removal and algae control to frontline management.

He continuously optimises plant operations and keeps detailed diaries documenting procedures and incidents – resources that have become invaluable across South East Water’s treatment network.

Whether isolating assets for safe maintenance, responding to emergencies, or pulling together the team for a Friday barbecue, his leadership is grounded in people, safety and service.

Reflecting on the award, Evans said it was a privilege to be recognised by his peers.

“The win humbled me, and I feel very honoured,” Evans said. “I would like to thank my Westernport Team and the Peninsula Team and the great support we receive from Carolyn Madden, our Tech Support and Works and Services Team. It’s a combined effort by all to keep these plants running smoothly with minimal issues.”

The Victorian Operator of the Year Award, presented annually by WIOA and sponsored by VicWater, recognises the best of the best among Victoria’s water operations professionals.

In addition to the prestige and recognition of being named the award winner, Ben will also receive a professional development prize of an all-expenses paid trip to an overseas water conference.
